Surface waters & Groundwater

Water courses are the main arteries of our society. The European Commission shares this vision: rivers do not have borders and flooding, water pollution and extreme forms of increasing desiccation and water logging are thus becoming common problems for the Member States.

Therefore, various directives have been issued, such as the Urban Waste Water Directive, the Water Framework Directive and The Flooding Directive to name a few. These directives demonstrate the integrated vision of the EC: our natural systems such as rivers, streams, canals and groundwater are inseparably linked with other, less natural, water systems such as sewers and drinking water networks. All of these aspects are covered by the concept of 'Integrated Water Management'.

These directives, which have their own implementation and interpretation in each EU Member State, ensure that governments consider Integrated Water Management as a sustainable, but not always easy enterprise. In the search for solutions to specific hydrological 'river' and/or 'groundwater' problems, the interactions with e.g. the sewer system, the socio-economic and ecological impact on humans and the environment, the sustainability framework, etc. are gaining importance.

The technical tools that are used to find solutions are no longer limited to 'stand-alone' and 'closed' software models: Open GIS systems are now seamlessly linked to the different calculation models (rivers, groundwater, sewerage, socio-economic and ecological impact assessment, etc.) from different providers (Innovyze, DHI, etc.). The results are sent to the cloud and made accessible to the numerous and different target groups.
